What comes next from S-mount

S-mount: the top player sits high with one leg folded under the bottom player's head, and one arm is trapped. The top player is winning, and the armbar is ready. The bottom player must keep the elbow bent and escape fast.

If you are the top player

Best The choice that works most often here.

  • Finish the armbar

The arm is already trapped, so this is the best finish. Put your leg over their head, squeeze your knees and lift your hips. Go slowly and let go as soon as they tap.

Ends the match if it works: a submission.

Good Works well with the right setup.

  • Keep the arm trapped

Keep your chest on their arm. There is no hurry.

    You stay in this position.

Risky Can work, but often goes wrong.

  • Mounted triangle

If they turn toward you to save the arm, lock your legs around their head and arm. This is a triangle choke from the top.

Ends the match if it works: a submission.

If you are the bottom player

Good Works well with the right setup.

  • Hitchhiker: turn and pull the elbow out

Point your thumb up, turn toward them and pull your elbow past their hip. This is the hitchhiker escape, and it takes you back to normal mount.

  • Clasp your hands, protect the elbow

Hold your hands together, keep the elbow bent and your chin down. This gives you time to escape.

    You stay in this position.

Mistake Avoid this: it usually makes things worse.

  • Bridge into them and stack

You cannot stack them from under S-mount. A big bridge here only pushes your arm deeper into the armbar.

Usually goes wrong. Choose a better option above.
