What comes next from standing
Both players are on their feet, and nobody has control yet. Each player wants to take the other down and land on top. The other choice is to pull guard (sit down and bring the other person into your guard).

Your options
Good Works well with the right setup.
- Pull closed guard
You sit down and pull your opponent into your closed guard (your legs locked around their waist). It gives no points, but you start in a position you know.
Leads to closed guard › - Double leg takedown
You drop your level, step in deep and grab both legs, then drive forward. Land past their legs in side control for 2 points.
Leads to side control › - Single leg
You grab one leg above the knee with your head on the inside, then take them down. You usually land on top in half guard for 2 points.
Leads to half guard, smashed › - Snap down to the turtle
You hold the back of their neck, pull their head down and move behind them. They end up on hands and knees (turtle), and their back is open.
Leads to turtle › - Grip fight and keep base
You keep your knees bent and your back straight, and you fight for the better grips. This is safe and lets you rest.
You stay in this position.
Mistake Avoid this: it usually makes things worse.
- Flying armbar
You jump up and try an armbar in the air. It rarely works, and you often land on your back under side control. Under IBJJF rules, white belts may not do it.
Usually goes wrong. Choose a better option above.
