What comes next from high mount, arm trapped

High mount: the top player sits high, with the knees near the bottom player's armpits, and one arm is trapped. The top player is winning and is one move from an armbar or americana. The bottom player must free the arm first.

If you are the top player

Good Works well with the right setup.

  • Armbar via S-mount

Move to S-mount, swing your leg over their head, then sit back for the armbar. Go slowly and let go as soon as they tap.

Ends the match if it works: a submission.
  • Americana on the trapped arm

Pin their wrist to the mat and slide your other hand under their arm to lock the grip. Slide their hand down the mat and lift their elbow slowly.

Ends the match if it works: a submission.
  • Hold high mount

Keep your knees in their armpits. They have nothing to push with.

    You stay in this position.

Risky Can work, but often goes wrong.

  • Ezekiel chokeGi

Put one arm behind their neck and hold your other sleeve, then press your other forearm across their throat. This needs a gi, and if it fails you drop back to normal mount.

Ends the match if it works: a submission.

If you are the bottom player

Best The choice that works most often here.

  • Free the arm: elbow down, turn into them

Pull your elbow down to your ribs and turn toward the trapped side. This frees the arm, and they slide back to normal mount.

Good Works well with the right setup.

  • Bridge hard and turn

A big bridge can shake them down to normal mount. If it fails, they move to S-mount and the armbar is close.

  • Defend the neck and the elbow

Keep your chin down and your elbow tight. Survive the attack first, then escape.

    You stay in this position.

Mistake Avoid this: it usually makes things worse.

  • Straighten the arm to push them off

Straightening your trapped arm to push them away gives them the armbar. Keep it bent.

Usually goes wrong. Choose a better option above.
