What comes next from back control

Back control: the attacker is behind the defender with a seatbelt grip and both feet hooked inside the thighs. The attacker is winning and wants the choke. The defender protects the neck first, then escapes.

If you are the has the back

Best The choice that works most often here.

  • Trap an arm with your leg

Step one leg over one of their arms to trap it. Now they have only one hand to protect both sides of the neck.

Leads to back control, arm trapped ›

Good Works well with the right setup.

  • Rear naked choke

Put your choking arm under their chin and your other hand behind their head, then squeeze. Let go as soon as your partner taps.

Ends the match if it works: a submission.
  • Hold the seatbelt

Keep your chest on their back and your hooks in. They cannot attack you from here.

    You stay in this position.

Risky Can work, but often goes wrong.

  • Bow and arrow chokeGi

Grip their collar with one hand and their pants with the other, then stretch your body out. It is a strong choke, but it needs a gi.

Ends the match if it works: a submission.
  • Armbar from the back

Only try it when they give you a straight arm. If it fails, you lose your hold and they start to escape.

Ends the match if it works: a submission.

If you are the back taken

Good Works well with the right setup.

  • Shoulders to the mat on the safe side

Slide down until your shoulders touch the mat on the side of their under arm (the arm under your armpit). Then push their top hook off.

Leads to back control, shoulders to the mat ›
  • Hand fight: two on one on the choking arm, chin down

Hold their choking arm with both hands and keep your chin down. Protect your neck first, then escape.

    You stay in this position.

Risky Can work, but often goes wrong.

  • Turn in to them

If their hooks are loose, turn all the way to face them, and you are in their closed guard. If it fails, they trap your arm.

    Leads to closed guard ›

Mistake Avoid this: it usually makes things worse.

  • Reach back for their head

Reaching back for their head lets them trap your arm. It also leaves your neck open.

Usually goes wrong. Choose a better option above.
  • Cross your feet and bridge

Bridging while their hooks are in does not move them. You use energy, and they can trap your arm.

Usually goes wrong. Choose a better option above.
