What comes next from a knee cut pass in progress
Knee cut pass (also called knee slice): the top player's knee is cutting across the bottom player's thigh. The top player is a little ahead. The next move decides it: the top player finishes the pass, or the bottom player gets the guard back.

If you are the passer
Best The choice that works most often here.
- Finish the slice: crossface and slide through
Get the crossface (your shoulder pushing their face away), drop your hips and slide your knee to the mat. You finish in side control for 3 points.
Leads to side control ›
Good Works well with the right setup.
- Take the back if they turn away
If they turn away from you, follow them and take the back. Back control is worth 4 points.
Leads to back control › - Pressure and hold
Keep their leg pinned with your knee and your weight on their hip. Wait for a good moment.
You stay in this position.
Mistake Avoid this: it usually makes things worse.
- Jump to mount early
Jumping to mount before you finish the pass often leaves their leg in. They keep the underhook and come up into half guard.
Usually goes wrong. Choose a better option above.
If you are the guard player
Good Works well with the right setup.
- Frame and recover the knee shield
Put a forearm frame on their shoulder, move your hips out and bring your knee back across. You are back in knee shield half guard.
Leads to knee shield half guard › - Underhook and wrestle up
Get an underhook (an arm under their armpit) before their knee reaches the mat, then come up into them. You reach half guard with the underhook.
Leads to half guard with underhook › - Hip escape and re-guard
Shrimp away (move your hips out), put a foot on their hip and start again in open guard.
Leads to open guard › - Frame and breathe
Keep your frames strong so their chest cannot land on yours. The pass is not finished until it does.
You stay in this position.
Mistake Avoid this: it usually makes things worse.
- Turn away from them
Turning your back during the pass makes it easy for them to take your back. Always face them.
Usually goes wrong. Choose a better option above.
