If you are the attacker

Best The choice that works most often here.

  • Seatbelt and insert the hooks

Lock a seatbelt grip (one arm over the shoulder, one under the arm) and put your chest on their back. Then hook both legs for back control and 4 points.

    Leads to back control ›

Good Works well with the right setup.

  • Seatbelt first

Lock your hands with one arm over the shoulder and one under the arm. The hooks come next.

Leads to turtle with seatbelt ›
  • Pressure on the hips

Keep your chest heavy on their back and your hips low. They cannot stand up.

    You stay in this position.

Risky Can work, but often goes wrong.

  • Clock chokeGi

Take a deep collar grip and walk around their head. This needs a gi, and they can still escape if you are slow.

Ends the match if it works: a submission.
  • Front headlock to guillotine

From in front of their head, wrap your arm under the chin, pull up and lock the guillotine. Let go as soon as they tap.

Ends the match if it works: a submission.

If you are the turtled

Good Works well with the right setup.

  • Sit out and recover guard

Post a hand, swing your far leg through and sit facing them. You are back in open guard.

    Leads to open guard ›
  • Technical stand-up

Post a hand and a foot and stand up facing them. You are back on your feet.

    Leads to standing ›
  • Shoulder roll to guard

Tuck your head and roll over the shoulder nearest them. You come up facing them and lock your closed guard.

    Leads to closed guard ›
  • Tight turtle: elbows and knees together, chin down

Keep your elbows and knees together and your chin down. They have nothing to hook and nothing to choke.

    You stay in this position.

Mistake Avoid this: it usually makes things worse.

  • Reach back for their leg

Reaching back for their leg makes space for their seatbelt and hooks. They can take your back.

Usually goes wrong. Choose a better option above.
