How to roll with bigger people

Do not let a bigger partner settle on top of you. Use frames, stay on your side, move early, and tap early when their weight is too much.

Why size matters

In BJJ, a heavier person is harder to move and feels heavy on top. Technique helps, but size still matters. Your goal is to keep space and not get pinned (held down) on the bottom.

Before the roll

Ask your partner to go light. A good partner controls their weight with smaller people. If they do not, you can stop the roll.

Key ideas

  • Use frames: put your forearms or hands on their body to keep space. A frame uses your bones to hold space. It is not a push. Read frames.
  • Stay on your side, not flat on your back.
  • Move early, before they settle their weight.
  • Keep your elbows in and your chin down.
  • Do not push with straight arms. Their weight can trap and lock your arm.
  • Use your guard: keep your legs between you and them.

When they are on top

  1. Breathe out and stay calm.
  2. Build frames on their neck and hip.
  3. Turn onto your side.
  4. Shrimp (push your hips away while on your side) to make space.
  5. Bring a knee back in and recover guard.

Example
Moving before the weight lands

Lena is 60 kg. Her partner is 95 kg. When he passes her guard, she frames on his hip and shrimps at once. She gets her knee back in before he settles. In a long pin, his weight tires her fast, so she moves early.

Can a small person beat a big person in BJJ?

Yes, with good technique, but it is harder. Weight classes exist in competition because size matters.

What position is worst against a bigger person?

Being pinned on the bottom, like under side control or mount. Try not to stay there.

Should I avoid rolling with bigger people?

Not always. A calm bigger partner teaches you a lot. Avoid partners who use their weight carelessly.
