What it is
Types of sparring are the different levels of resistance you train at, from cooperative drilling to fully live rolling. Drilling repeats a technique while your partner lets it work, positional sparring starts from one position with a goal, flow rolling is slow and light, and live rolling is full resistance. Using each one on purpose is how you learn fastest without getting hurt.
Where it shows up
- Drilling: when you are learning a new technique and need clean repetitions.
- Positional sparring: when you want to test one position, for example escaping side control, against real resistance, with resets when someone reaches the goal.
- Flow rolling: when you want to try new things, warm up, or train while tired or nursing a small injury.
- Live rolling: when you want to test everything against a partner who is really trying.
Key details
- Agree on the intensity before you start. A quick question, light or hard, saves arguments and injuries.
- Match your partner. Roll lighter with smaller, newer, older or injured partners, and let them set the pace.
- Pick partners who are good for what you need: someone slightly better to learn, someone newer to try new moves.
- In flow rolling, give up positions. If you hold on, it stops being a flow roll.
- Live is not a fight. Even at full effort, control your submissions and tap early.
Common mistakes
- Mistake: going hard in every round. You get tired and hurt, and you never try anything new.
- Mistake: resisting fully while your partner drills. They never get a clean repetition and you learn nothing either.
- Mistake: speeding up when a flow roll starts to go badly. Your partner matches you and it turns into a scramble nobody asked for.
