How to choose a BJJ gym
Choose a gym that is safe, clean, close to you, and has classes for beginners. Try a class first, and watch how the students treat each other.
Start with a trial class
Many gyms offer a free trial class or a trial week. Use it. Try two or three gyms near you before you sign up. You learn more in one class than from any website.
What to look for
| Check | A good sign |
|---|---|
| Beginner classes | There is a fundamentals or beginner class on the timetable. |
| Safety | The coach watches the rolls and stops anything dangerous. |
| Partners | Higher belts roll lightly with new students. |
| Cleanliness | The mats are clean and do not smell. Shoes stay off the mat. |
| Coach | The head coach has years of training. Many gyms show their coach's rank. |
| Timetable | The class times fit your week. |
Warning signs
- New students roll hard with no help from a coach.
- Many students are injured.
- Dirty mats, or people walk on the mat in shoes.
- Pressure to sign a long contract on your first day.
- Students are rude to beginners or to each other.
Questions to ask the gym
- Do you have a beginner programme?
- How long is the contract, and how do I cancel?
- When can new students start rolling?
- Do you teach gi, no-gi, or both?
- Can I borrow a gi for the trial?
Tom visits two gyms. The first is big and famous, but nobody helps him and his partner rolls hard. The second is small and close to his work. The coach explains each move and pairs him with a calm partner. Tom joins the second gym.
How much does a BJJ gym cost?
It depends a lot on your city and country. Ask for the full price, including any joining fee.
Does the coach need to be a black belt?
Not always. Some good gyms are run by brown or purple belts who are linked to a black belt. Ask about the coach's training.
Should I choose gi or no-gi?
Either is a good start. Many gyms teach both. Read gi vs no-gi.
Which is the best sign in a trial class?
Train it on the Path
The Before you roll unit turns this into short lessons: you see a position and pick the best move.
