BJJ weight classes
This page lists the IBJJF adult weight classes for the gi and for no-gi. It also shows how the weigh-in works.
How weight classes work
In a tournament you compete in a division. A division is a group with the same belt, age group, gender and weight class.
Each weight class has a maximum weight. The limits come from the weight chart on each event page. Each event says if it uses kilograms (kg) or pounds (lb).
Masters divisions (age 30 and over) use the same weight classes as adults.

The no-gi limits are lower than the gi limits in every class. Many charts also give Portuguese names, such as Galo for Rooster.
The open class
The open class has no weight limit. It is also called absoluto. People of any weight can meet in it. Check your event's rules to see who may enter.
How the weigh-in works
- First an official checks your gi or no-gi clothes. Then you are weighed.
- You step on the scale once, before your first match.
- You wear your gi or no-gi clothes on the scale, but no shoes.
- If you are over the limit, you are disqualified. You cannot move to another weight class.
Ana weighs 62 kg in her gi. The women's Feather limit is 58.50 kg, so she is too heavy for it. The Light limit is 64.00 kg. Ana enters Light.
A man weighs 80 kg in his gi. What is the lightest IBJJF gi weight class he can enter?
