What it is
The hip bump sweep is a closed-guard sweep where you sit up, post on one hand and drive your shoulder into their chest to tip them over. It needs no grips on their clothing, so it works in gi and no-gi. It pairs with the kimura and the guillotine, which appear when they post an arm to stop it.
When to use it
- They sit back on their heels in your closed guard with upright posture.
- Their hands are on your chest or belly rather than gripping your collar.
- You want a sweep that leads straight into the kimura and the guillotine.
How to do it
- Open your guard and sit up fast, as if doing a sit-up, on the side of the arm you will post.
- Post that hand on the mat behind you, close to your hip.
- Swing your free arm over their shoulder on that side, the side away from your post, and grab the back of their arm so it cannot post.
- Lift your hips off the mat, over the posted hand, and drive your hip and shoulder into their chest, bumping them over toward the side away from your post.
- As they fall, swing your top leg over and follow them into mount.
- Settle your weight and secure the position before attacking.
Key details
- Sit up explosively. A slow sit-up lets them push you straight back down.
- The power comes from the hips lifting, not the arm pushing.
- Drive diagonally across them, toward the far hip, not straight up.
- If they post a hand to stop it, their arm is now exposed to the kimura.
Common mistakes
- Mistake: pushing with the arm while your hips stay on the mat, so they base out and you fall back.
- Mistake: bumping straight up instead of across, so you lift them and nothing else happens.
- Mistake: not following through with the leg, so they land and you end up in bottom half guard.
What they will try
- They post the free hand wide on the mat and keep their base, which you answer with the kimura.
- They drive their head and weight forward as you sit up, which you answer with the guillotine.
